I really think that what we're seeing isn't an algo change (in general, not just what happened last night) but it's a matter of how Google sees search differently. Almost every day I read something about how Google has a vision for the future, and it doesn't include brand-less websites. Instead, it's centered around Google plus, Google's other web properties, and the big boys.
Google used to think mom-and-pop websites were the greatest thing ever. I think those days are over.
