I don't know if I am right or not, but to mee it seemed that Facebook grew with the demise of MySpace, kids going over to facebook instead of using the worthless and ugly MySpace. They got something new that they could use to communicate and stay in touch with friends. That then became something that families bought into and it just took off from there.
Google+ and +1? I am not sure but why and who would use it? It seems to be geared towards "nerds" like us and not really to the ordinary people of the world. I also think that Google has a trust issue. I know I don't want Googletoknow everything that FB does about me,my family and friends! Google is the Big Brother company that would sell you ot for anything. Maybe Facebook will do the same, but they don't "appear" as a huge Big Brother.
The sites where I have seen, whereof this site is one, that has a +1 button don't have anybody clicking on it. Why? People don't know what it is and there is no real gratification if they did click on it. I think the Google+ and +1 is dead in the water and won't take off like Facebook did/do. If Google is using it as an indicator of popularity and in the algo then it will get really skewed. Maybe have something on your site asking "Did you like this site?" and have people click the +1 when they leave? OR get paid by Google for every +1 you get since the only one that will gain anything from it is Google with their ads?!?
'nuff of ranting...
