I think this is a really good theory. The problem for me is figuring out which pages Google considers to be the crappy ones. There's no pattern for me, to the way my pages were deranked. Most of the ones which were deranked the hardest were actually the thickest, 1000+ word articles composed entirely of original writing.
So the trick there is how to figure out what Google thinks is thin, because it doesn't necessarily penalize the thin pages the most.

@tedster How would you fit this theory with my situation, where many of my heaviest demotions were the thickest, most content heavy, most original pages?
