Perhaps it was the overwhelming quality signal the site sent by using the keyword 40+ times on their home page.

I'm seeing the same thing. 2 sentence description, stuffed with the keyword 4-5 times, then a picture or two, then absolute garbage text stuffed with the keyword in different forms 20-30 times, then a bogus menu stuffed with it as well and those "menu" links link right back to the same page it is on.
