It's a shame that AskTheBuilder was hit.
Not from my perspective. That site fails and have implemented their AdSense in a way that I would classify as a click trap. I'd also call that a "greedy" AdSense implementation.
the pages are now returning a standard 404 error. I don't think I'm going to bother requesting a removal via Google... I'm not in a big enough rush, and with a site my size it gets crawled pretty quickly.
You'll want to 301 those to an appropriate replacement or send a 410 Gone response. Google will continue to request those URIs if they are returning a 404. Your best bet is to preserve your site equity and 410 those puppies if they are gone forever. It acts just like a URI Removal Request. I've seen documents Gone in less than 48 hours after implementation.
