The "content farm" algo imposes a site wide penalty on you if you have enough copied/repurposed stuff on your site.

I don't think that's the mechanism. Many big name sites that lost rankings are not using copied content. They're original content, but really poorly written and with no "meat". In other words, it's only content according to the technical definition of the word. But it's really just the thinnest of gruel.
