Less pages meaning more link juice to be spread upon the pages that stay
It depends on the linking patterns (internal and external) and not on the number of pages. Sometimes dropping a lot of pages can disrupt circulation of link juice and cause ranking problems that way.
At one time I had believed that 5000 pages of long tail terms would help - but it hasn't from a buying traffic perspective.
