Last week, I started to see my revenues rise. Dramatically. I have a fairly large (1 mill+ page) informational site, no black hat, been established since 1997. We have always done fairly well in traffic. About two years ago, it started to fade, and I took a BIG hit last April. I am now at (average) 1/6 to 1/8 the traffic from 2-3 years ago. BIG hit in income.
I am doing a lot to fix that... but I have yet to find the magic bullet (if there is one). Again, just an honest site, with deep content.
So last week, like I said, I saw a dramatic increase in ad revenue, and a corresponding increase in traffic. It started Dec 1, with a 50% increase over base, then Dec 2 shot up 3x base, Dec 3 4x and peaked on the 4 at 5X; Dec 5 was 4X, Dec 6 was 2X, and it was gone by the 7th.
I have always thought Google has been diverting my traffic somehow, messing with it. I am not paranoid, I do not thing G is out to get me specifically, but somehow the changes G has made seem to have effected my area of the web poorly for my sites. My topic is evergreen, and we are a pretty recognized authority in the subject. To be honest, I would expect LESS hits this time of year, as more people hit shopping sites or the like... not looking up my topic. I have seen a lot of hits eaten away by Wikipedia, but no other real players in my scene. I still see us about where we have always been in the serps for terms I watch. I just cannot see how we could have lost 600-800% of our traffic naturally.
And then this. Seemed like Google was just undoing what they have changes, but only for a couple days. Sort of saying, "Look what we can do, if we wanted," and then shutting it right off again. There was NO natural reason for the increase in traffic. There was no one word or area of interest that had the bump- I saw proportional increases in all terms across the board.
According to Analytical, the bump was also shown in Yahoo and Bing, though the increase was not as big proportionally, maybe up to 3X. Go figure.
My head is just swimming. I can see no reason for this. I would love it to return! Anyone else see this strange increase?
