I long for the good old days when google just plain worked.
In a recent interview Rick Skrenta (CEO for the new search engine Blekko) said that in the past ten years the size of the web has increased 100 times. That kind of scale shift is bound to change the nature of search, and I find that it's one lens we can use to understand changes at Google.
The kind of thing being discussed in the Traffic Shaping thread [webmasterworld.com], for example, is one of their responses to the huge number of documents that need to be handled and organized for searchers.
