I recently worked on a project where the company used to have one website with three distinct target audiences. They were doing OK - but with a lot of ups and downs.
They created three websites, one for each user intention on three different domains. A few months in and it's working well. The visitor segments have a much easier time and Google has it sorted out very nicely, without any roller coaster traffic - in either volume or quality.
