I think this shift at Google is recent, a part of their recent emphasis on ranking the SITES or BRANDS that they feel are good destinations for their end users. It all began with "Mayday" and has been getting tweaked since then.
Google used to do a better job of honoring the actual content owner when they ranked pretty much by the page -- and maybe they will be able to do that again, someday soon. In the meantime, marketing your own content is always a good idea. It's possible that just a few strong backlinks will shift the balance for you.
