very good post, i myself see website performance as a metric for user experiece much more than google ranking.
I mainly use css sprites to improve performance, because I am not so sure if gzip is secure enough for most users, or most browsers.
btw, iambic9 provide a very good idea, but i dont know how to set proloading.
