As for the question of new keywords being picked up / evaluated, I also have the sense that they are not. New content is consistently ranking much less well than older, established content, and much less well than I would have expected based on prior experience with adding new content.

I'm mostly talking about content that already ranked pretty well across all of my synonyms for quite some time, and I'm just trying to adjust the proportion of traffic that comes from each synonym.

Previously, I was just trying to maximize traffic. I figured any traffic was better than nothing. But since it occurred to me that I might have a specific allotment of traffic, I thought it would be better to use up that allotment on higher-revenue keywords.
