This is why I don't make big changes to my big site(s). Too risky. Unless something is broke, I tend to lean towards leaving it.
I use new development techniques and styles on new sections of the site, but the old, ranked pages never get touched.
Just my rule of thumb.
Please google, don't penalize a site for following YOUR suggestions for increase PAGE SPEED!
I don't think it is a penalty. Your page source changed. The order of things changed. Their algorithm utilizes certain factors of your site that changed. Perhaps it is just a precautionary sand-box effect. When something they have known to be the same for 13 years changes across the board, they need to re-evaluate to make sure they are targeting queries to the right pages again.
