How many navigation links does a spider now have to wade through before it would reach the unique core content of the page? How does that compare with the previous version?

In my case, I reduced the number of navigation links significantly. I still hold the opinion (barring a better explanation) that making major changes to a site switches on a protective mechanism, or requires the need of a complete site reindexing. I don't have enough evidence to support my claim 100%, but that is the best theory I have right now. With a month having passed, I am seeing some improvement now, but only slight.
