However the links come from the next level of links rather than directly from the home page.

What I'm suggesting is rather than adding a series of links at the footer, if you can add a paragraph or 2 of natural language text at the bottom (keep in mind I have no idea what your site looks like), that would get them on the home page in a format that G seems to like.

But as you said, it's also not the worst idea to hold off on any changes right now, until we see how this all shakes out, and if Dusky's right, that may be sooner rather than later. If you do add the links and it seems to help, please report back, as that would confirm yet one more variable...
