My sense is that this is more a measure of PAGE quality than site quality. I know that there has been a long standing problem with certain pages ranking on long tail searches only because the parent domain was strong. However, when you click through the relevance was really weak or absent, even if the vocabulary was there.

Whoa - now that's an interesting change. It seems to support the idea that this change is a good one for the user. Even though the site lost traffic (and that certainly hurts sites with ad based income), it looks like the traffic you still get is better targeted. Thanks for sharing that one.
