...to make sure the data is being extracted properly. If it is not, you've done something wrong. Go back to Step 1 and do not submit until you're able to extract proper rich snippet(s) from your document.

Please take note, this is not something that is specific to Google. Microformats are being imported by a variety of resources with the Search Engines being just one of them. How do you think the Search Engines are getting some of their Social Media data? ;)
