They must be feeling a little bit of pressure from Bing to be advertising just their search engine.
Thats the thing I found interesting as well; paying to advertise their golden goose. Over the years Google has introduced all kinds of different products and they have spent literally countless amounts of money gobblng up all kinds of clever companies. However, they have only made money on the first thing they ever really came out with; contextual advertising based on their search results, i.e. Adwords (mixed in with some Adsense). Absolutely nothing else has added to the bottom line. (its actually quite a streak)
Despite all the talk, I personally don't see any indication Google is slipping one bit both in market share and technical capabilities when it comes to search. So to see that ad was startling to me, in fact they must exist but I dont ever recall seeing a Google advertisement for their search engine.
So why spend money advertising the successful product? Why not spend it on one of the broken toys they have lying around?
