Very useful thread -- thanks to MadScientist and everyone else for sharing the server config info. I ran an environmental variable perl script and (amongst other things) see this:

HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate

So can I assume from that line that my hosting account's server handles gzip OK?

If so, what would a person put in their htaccess file to trigger its use?
