I didn't require a cookie to get the AJAX results (indeed I had cookies disabled). The only noticeable difference that I saw was the lack of a new URL request, and the different URL. So to me, it seems like a technology test more than anything - to assess support for this method of displaying results. I saw this from a US-IP only, and nothing from the UK.
