---- Splitting up long homepage

I think my homepage has become too long. I currently use bookmarks to link to 3 subsections. I would like to split the page up, taking 2 of these subsections out and give them each their own page. My question is this: When I link newly created internal pages from the newly created subsection pages will they rank as easily as if I was adding them to the homepage or will I have to wait for the new subsection pages to establish in the SERP's first? Perhaps it would be better to add new internal pages to the homepage first and then do the split?

Volumewise, the 2 subsections that I want to remove, each take up about 1/6th of the homepage.

It used to be the case that when a new internal page was added to the site, it would rank in the top 5 and the HP would join it creating a double indented entry. It's now the case that the HP often ends up on page 2 instead. I'm wondering if this is because the HP has become too long.
