I have bought domains too and what I have learned is that many owners tend to use traffic-driving schemes before selling to inflate their stats. As soon as the new owner takes charge and stop using those traffic programs the visitors sink. Unfortunately most public traffic data does not capture if the traffic is genuine or not. That is why I have stopped trusting the stats at the time of purchase and look at other metrics like ad income as a better measure of the price and whether to buy a domain or not.
