... and what of those old supplemental results that I was very pleased to see Google throw away about a month ago, after having them hanging around for years and years?

Almost a half of them have reappeared back in the index in the last few days (but as many are for PDF files, I cannot ascertain their cache date - I guess that they are re-cached with dates that are newer than 2005 June but I cannot prove it).
