Yes, I have been in communication with Hollywood - the site that he is having problems with has Canonical issues.

Exactly, do a site:domain.com -www and see if you have any entries.

Check the PR of an internal page - does it have different PR on the non-www to the www? - If so there is a split - Google may have been able to consolidate PR etc for a homepage but the site can still be split. (So it seems)
