This gets even more complex if you use several apps to generate the final file in its online format. Meta data embedded by one video editing application may well be wiped out or overwritten when you go from, say, an mp4 file to an flv. It's something like embedded meta data in a pdf file, which is often wonky but when it's accurate it helps.
One of the commonly overlooked areas of video optimization is the embedded meta data. If it's there, it looks to me like it can be helpful. But right now, it's often not there in many online files -- or if it is there, it's really crazy. It's common to see default choices from when the software was first installed.
