In my nich after the December 27th so called refresh of the index, a secure page (https)came from nowhere and started to climb to the top of the serps for highly competitive terms. It is baffling me to see this page where it is in terms of ranking. The page is the wrong landing page for some of the terms it ranks for. The url is from a shared secure server domain and is in the UK. So, it is the wrong country for the US serps, the wrong landing page for some terms, and I assume has no PR since it is a https page, yet it ranks like gold!
I checked the back links to the page in Yahoo and found several thousands of direct anchor text(the terms it ranks great for) links from several rotating ad networks. None of these links appear to be on topic either.
Google must be giving more weight to TLD(top level domain) links regardless of topic for this page to rank where it does.
