Keeping copious notes is a good suggestion, but I didn't do anything to my site for at least the previous two months leading up to my site's decline. The www and non-www versions of my site have both been in operation for years--this recent drop has just made me look at anything that might get my site higher up the search results (and the resubmitted site map issue pointed that little fact out to me).
