One thing we tend to ignore that a fair bit of the research at Google (and most other search engines) is driven by academics and the algorithms are based a lot on the citation model.

Sometimes it helps to step back from obvious SEO manipulations and step into the feet of someone writing a research paper .. what do they cite and what to do they avoid citing.

Academics after all invented the whole publish or perish thing. Plenty of what google has to deal with, copied papers, bad quality etc tends to stem from issues that academics both create and have to judge on a daily basis.

Hopefully it brings a focus on quality, expert v/s authority etc etc ...
