---- Is www.example.net/ the same as www.example.net?

Hi,
I have been learning about duplicate content on this forum and have introduced .htaccess files into my site.
Google has my site as www.example.net/ and I have done 301s to www.example.net/ from index.htm index html default.htm non www, etc. but I have thousands of inbound links going to my site which are just going to www.example.net which I have built up over the years.

Will google see these as different URLS? (www.example.net/ and www.example.net)

Should I take away the / from my .htaccess?

I have lost my number one slot to no-where in MSN and I can't help thinking it is because of the changes I have made trying to improve in Google.

Mark
