as in person-to-person trust, even where it is gained, if it is later betrayed, then trust is not easily recovered to former levels.

It's my experience that a "trusted" site can get away with far more than an "untrusted" site, all else being about equal.

Which makes me believe that, once that trust has been obtained, one has to worry a lot less about canonical, duplicate content, keyword stuffing etc issues.
