where changing the links from relative to absolute might be a huge, time-consuming project

Does not have to be if you use find/edit and replace for all pages. Front Page has this feature if you are using it. I have even found another software program that can find and replace multiple lines of code at one time. Quite handy when trying to change your layout on hundreds of pages.
