I have a site in the travel sector which for years has appeared around position 15 for many keywords. Internal pages rank well. 10 days ago I ran an experiment with an internal page and split the target phrase on the page (not the title) so nowhere did it appear as the phrase.... no difference. I then did the same on the home page (with some apprehension!) and the same... no difference. Go figure?!
