My domain is registered in the UK and hosted in Canada. so where it's hosted makes no difference. I wish I'd got a .com now as my site is relevant wherever you are that's part of the point of the WWW never mind time to buy a new domain maybe and register it in the US or does it matter where it's registered? I don't think google is clever enough to also know where a domain was registered or whether that's relevant?
Looking at my site - it's a co.uk and I think this is the case. I'm at no.1 for my search in google.co.uk but have dropped from no.6 to the 10 page on google.com for the same phrase.
