When it comes right down to it, though, it's not really going to rock your world when you DO get the credit. It won't hurt anything, but a dozen or so links doesn't make any huge jumps in the results.

If you have only a dozen links to start with an additional dozen will help alot. There are still some profitable not very competitive keywords out there. I currently have five sites with fewer than fifty external backlinks (total, not just Google's), some with less than ten. Get one good link with proper anchor text before you get ten off topic links with your url as the link text.
