I can only speak of my experience but it is counter to your hypothesis. I - like many of the former top 10 sites in my category - took a huge serp drop and on a keyphrase that is the first three words of my title (e.g. TITLE: keywd1 keywd2 keywd3 blah blah blah blah blah).
