I would suggest to people to experiment when you're not sure. Run some tests. It's worth the time.

In the end, as people have mentioned, the best long term strategy is to do what's best for your visitors. If you do this you'll have a much better chance at surviving radical algo changes, filters or whatever else G may do in the future.

G's goal is to provide quality search results. If your page is a quality page that people find useful it's in G's best interest to see you rank well. Don't forget this very important fact while you're thinking about bleeding PR and other things that are, in the the end, comparing tax returns (fruitless endeavours).
