I think this could be the network filter that I think google has imposed that allows only one site from a network to show for a niche.
By interlinking heavily between each other google suspects that the sites are owned by the same person.By rights taking the links down should mean you come back but to be sure get some nice links from external sites that are not linking to your competitor.
