Well don't give up yet. I don't think you have a penalty, I'm still not convenced that there are penalties. Google doesn't have enough time to worry about that.

I think what is happening is that you are probably showing up in searches that you are not aware of and neither are your visitors.

How is your site set up? Is it an information site or a store front? Do you have many outbound links? Are your pages targeted for keywords or do they cover an overall theme?

If your site is a PR 5 then Googlebot will be back eventually, have patience. In the mean time you may want to make sure your pages are not too specifically targeted. Make it more of a theme of the page content rather than the focus. Also try providing links to two or more 'expert' sites for your same topic.

If you are not getting the traffic it can't hurt to adjust your site just a little bit before your next crawl.
