We searched and destroyed all the not-www links, and at the same time made the 301 redirect to www. Result has been that the not-www pages have been dropping like flies from Google (except the index page which has always been listed as www). Crawls every day or so; PR still shows on sub-pages (they're even updated!), logs show the 301 is in operation. It's a slow death due to a 301. I have a simple thesis - snipped - but I defer to those who have developed more sophisticated arguments. [edited by: DaveAtIFG at 4:49 am (utc) on Jan. 5, 2004]
Yep - a simple redirect on the server. At some point in the past Googlearse must have found a single no-www link to this site, deep crawled it, and everything but the index page was then listed as not-www.
