I was number 3 and 4 for a 2 word phrase. My index page was 3 and an internal page was 4. The index page is gone and the internal page is 13. They both had the same anchor text from other sites for the most part. The only difference is that the internal page does not have the keyword phrase linked to it from any of my sites. It is linked to from all the other pages but only from an image as part of the menu. The main page still ranks the same for 3 word phrases and that is pretty good. I don't see an index ban. Go through your logs and look up some minor terms and I bet you still rank where you used to. I think that Google has made an effort to make info sites rank well on keywords that should only return info sites. I still rank on terms that have to do with me specifically. Like keyword phrase profession I just fell out on the keyword phrase part by itself.
