I'm reminded of the joke about the open heart surgeon and the car mechanic.
Cutting to the quick, the car mechanic remarked how similar their jobs were, but that the heart surgeon got paid so much more.

The surgeon replied that open-heart surgery was a bit like changing the piston rings on a car engine without stopping the engine.

I suspect that updating an index and servicing queries at the same time is pretty similar...

Would you rather Google shut down while this was going on?
