Problem is for those of us running narrow amateur sites this is often the case. Particularly when there aren't very many "competing" sites. The reasons are #1) there aren't that many searchers a day to begin with, and #2) because of the lack of competition people find simple search phrases work well enough. Only when simple searches fail ("widgets") do people tend to start refining to get what they need ("blue widgets Tokeka Kansas"). For competetive commercial searches this sort of keyword phrase targeting is the key. I do very well, even in the new index, on more complex search terms. However, my logs show most aren't using those.
