You are probably experiencing with what we called the "everflux". Google grabs "fresh" pages here and there and gives them a good position for a few days and poof! they simply vanish...

...to come back a month (or so) later at a lower position.

The fact that you scored high with your new version is a good sign that you achieved a proper balance with the page.
