The sitemap protocol suggests you provide the location of your sitemap in your robots.txt file see: [sitemaps.org...] Still if you're uncertain or concerned, it wouldn't do any harm to provide a link. Just hide it with CSS:
I do not think it's necessary to put a link on your site.
