Won't host with them. Is there something specific I should look for?
If you aren't hosting with them you are not going to be able to have control over your full DNS settings via the control panel other than nameservers. It'll tell you that your DNS settings management is provided at your hosting provider. But that can get tricky. One of my clients has a bunch of names registered through them and didn't know how to point a particular one to my nameservers. He gave me the username and password so I had an opportunity to poke around in the control panel during a visit.
I can afford hosting for one domain, but not for the other right now.
Most hosting plans will allow you to host multiple sites under the one plan. If you can afford one, the additional ones can be hosted under same account for no additional charge.
As for a domain registrar, I'm accumulating enough names right now that I too am looking for a long-term solution to bring them all under one umbrella.
I'm leaning toward OpenSRS based on research I've been doing. But there is a $95 account setup fee, yuk. Many say they are of the more expensive choices but they include domain privacy for no additional charge -- something many others charge up to $10 for. I guess it evens itself out.
I'm not in a hurry though plus they supposedly have a coupon code floating around for a free reseller account ($95 value). Found a source last night that says he got his through watching some of their on-demand videos from their site. I might try that, and maybe learn something along the way too.
