Idle thought: It's the domain-naming equivalent of what happened to phone numbers a while back. (Speaking of the US and, I think, Canada.) For years and years it was perfectly straightforward: three digits with 0 or 1 in the middle was an area code. Anything else was a local prefix. Now it's just a big mess and you don't know who or where you're calling.
