Well, there is not a lot to say, and what there is to say is boring. I'm not an expert, but I have to answer questions for my clients about dot-info, etc., all of the time. The same rules apply, although I will admit there are some interesting twists on this one. What is happening? Heading to where in search of money? Will the expert members come forward to comment?
Any professional webmasters working for others: I believe it's wise to right now come up with a higher base rate for managing domains for clients, per domain. Figure your hourly rate, triple it. Or more. This way, this ICANN action moves from a "buy your webmaster's family a nice lunch" deal to "take the entire family on a nice vacation" program. And, I think we can allllllll agree right now, oh yes, all clients need to cover themselves here. Right? Good. OK, now...
The folks who own sex.com (and all other "hot" names) will have the opportunity to acquire the name first. And they will take it, of course. And that will be that. And all of the brand names will take their name. A few will forget, later file a claim of breach and get it back.
Everyone at WW who is not in the above category (most of the world) will either ignore it or cover themselves and pay the fee, depending on their view of the internet and marketing in general. There will be a funny story in your newspaper.
What is different this time is our clients worries about this will also include their view of the sex industry. Probably the most interesting area will be localities. Chicago.com will get first shot at it and they are likely to take it. (Wouldn't you?) Again, there will be a funny story in your newspaper.
There will be some action in the unincorporated areas of the world that are less competitive, perhaps. SouthAmerica.com will go for it? There will be a funny story in your newspaper, maybe.
The action, alas, will be among those on the web marketing to our more base natures. Which means ya ain't gonna get a real frank and candid economic analysis here since, as I have noted before, most all of us here are (or have been at one time) super models and, well, we get more than we can handle...
