There are dozens if not hundreds of things you can do with a domain name, only one of which is to host a web site.
This is an interesting topic. (maybe should be its own thread). Exactly what can you do with a domain, other than, of course, build a website?
Just for fun I'd like to see a comprehensive list of the things you can do with a domain name. Picking it up from Crevier, you can
-use it for email
- use it for "hidden" web content (ie in a folder with no link from the root directory)
- park it
- redirect it to another domain
- use it to store FTP files for public access
- FTP files for private access
