Thats right, some domains that expired back on 4/01 have already been re-released, so first you should see if it is available. If you find that it is still registered under your friends name then ask him to renew it and then transfer it into your name. The idea here is to get it before it expires because it will go fast if it is a decent name and is re-released to the public. There are firms out there snapping them up 5 mins after they are released if they have any decent value.
